Sebi Raises Brokerage Fee Cap
The Securities & Exchange Board of India (Sebi) has increased the brokerage fee cap from 2% to 6% and replaced the total expense ratio (TER) with the base expense ratio (BER).
This change is expected to reduce costs for mutual fund investors and have a negligible impact on AMCs and brokerages.
On Thursday, the share prices of several AMCs surged, with HDFC AMC, Canara Robeco AMC, and Nippon Life AMC rising between 5.5% and 7.2%.
ICICI Prudential AMC also made a strong debut, closing 19.5% above its IPO price.
Experts believe that while the removal of exit loads might hit AMCs' revenues, the introduction of BER will offset this impact.
The net effect on AMCs' earnings is expected to be minimal, and the market response is anticipated to be positive.

“It gives me happiness that I’ve been able to be part of a company that will keep doing one thing: managing money properly. Once we do that, if we manage money well, with the brand we have and the support from the whole ecosystem, we’ll do well as a company, and extremely so.”

“Listing was in line with our expectation and even market mood supported the debut. Post listing the valuations now are in line with all the peers in the same business. With strong pedigree of ICICI Bank and Prudential, robust digital adoption and low concentration risk across schemes, we believe ICICI Pru AMC could command a premium valuation multiple than its peers. Given its dominant market position and long-term tailwinds from financialization of household savings.”
