NCP Loses Leaders Over Jamaat Alliance
The National Citizen Party (NCP) in Bangladesh, which started after a big protest in July 2024, is having a big argument.
Some members don't like that the NCP is teaming up with Jamaat-e-Islami (JEI) for the upcoming elections.
They say Jamaat did bad things in the past and is causing problems now.
Because of this, some important leaders have quit the party.
They say the alliance goes against what the NCP stands for.
The NCP hasn't officially said they are joining Jamaat, but Jamaat's leader said they are part of an eight-party coalition.
More members might leave the NCP and join other parties or run alone in the elections.
Some people say the protests that led to the NCP's creation were actually planned to bring chaos and help Jamaat come back to power.
The NCP started with the support of the interim government chief Muhammad Yunus, who took over after the protests.
At least 30 NCP members oppose the party's alliance with Jamaat-e-Islami (JEI) ahead of the February elections.
Dissenting members cite Jamaat's controversial past and recent divisive activities as reasons for their opposition.
Senior leaders Tajnuva Jabeen, Mahfuj Alam, and Tasnim Jara have resigned over the alliance issue.
Jamaat-e-Islami's chief announced that the NCP is part of an eight-party coalition, though the NCP did not attend the briefing.
More NCP members may defect to rival parties or contest the elections as independents.
