Finland Tightens Citizenship Laws with Financial, Security Changes
Finland is making it harder to become a citizen.
Starting in December 2025, people who want to become Finnish citizens must have enough money and not have received too much help from the government.
They also must not have committed serious crimes.
If someone lies to get citizenship, they can lose it within 10 years.
The government is doing this to make sure people who become citizens are self-sufficient and safe for the country.
Finland introduces stricter financial requirements for citizenship applicants, including no unemployment or social assistance for more than 3 months in the past 2 years.
The waiting period for citizenship after criminal offenses is extended to 1–8 years.
National security measures allow the Finnish Security and Intelligence Service to issue statements on citizenship declarations.
Serious offenses like terrorism or treason can lead to loss of citizenship with at least 2 years of imprisonment.
The period to decide on loss of citizenship due to false information is extended to 10 years.
