Disputes Over Backward Class Reservations in Elections
There is a big argument about how many seats should be reserved for Backward Classes (BCs) in local elections in Telangana and Maharashtra.
The BJP says the Congress party is not keeping their promises and is reducing the number of seats for BCs.
In Telangana, the Backward Classes Commission says there was a mistake in counting and the number of seats for BCs should be fixed before the elections.
In Maharashtra, the Election Commissioner says all elections will follow the legal rules, but some areas need to fix their seat counts first.
Both sides are trying to make sure everything is fair for the elections.
BJP accuses Congress of reducing BC reservations in Panchayat elections from 42% to 17%.
Telangana Backward Classes Commission recommends halting Panchayat elections to correct reservation errors.
Maharashtra Election Commissioner ensures local body elections will follow 50% reservation limits.
Reservations in 20 out of 32 districts in Maharashtra need to be redrawn.
BMC elections in Maharashtra are likely to be held by the end of January or early February 2026.
