IRS Discontinues Direct File Option for 2026
The IRS has decided to stop offering the Direct File option for filing taxes for free starting in 2026.
This means taxpayers will need to use other methods to file their taxes without paying.
Some alternatives include the Free File program, which is available to those with an adjusted gross income under $84,000.
There are also options like Free File Fillable Forms, the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program for those earning around $67,000 or less, and MilTax for military families.
The IRS believes that these private sector options can provide better services than the Direct File program.
IRS Direct File option will not be available for the 2026 filing season.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent suggests private sector alternatives.
Free File program remains available for taxpayers with AGI under $84,000.
Free File Fillable Forms are available for all taxpayers but lack guided assistance.
VITA and TCE programs offer free in-person assistance for eligible taxpayers.
