Madras HC Protects Kamal Haasan's Personality Rights
The Madras High Court has stepped in to protect actor and politician Kamal Haasan's personality rights.
They issued an order to stop people from using his name, image, titles, dialogues, and other personal details without permission, especially for making money.
This means no one can sell things with his face or make deepfakes of him.
However, the court said that satire, cartoons, and creative expression that are legal are still allowed.
The court did this because they were worried about how this misuse could affect Kamal Haasan's dignity and his ability to make money from his own image.
The court also asked a company called 'Neeye Vidai' to explain why they were using Haasan's image and titles to sell clothes without permission.
The next hearing is in February.
Madras High Court granted interim relief to Kamal Haasan to protect his personality rights.
The court issued an interim injunction restraining unauthorized commercial exploitation of his likeness, including his name, image, titles, and dialogues.
Protections include his name, image, initials, titles, dialogues, and other identifiable attributes.
The order aims to prevent the circulation of deepfakes and morphed visuals featuring Haasan, but allows satire, cartoons, and lawful creative expression.
The court directed 'Neeye Vidai' to file a counter-affidavit and adjourned the proceedings to February.
