India weighs sugar duty cuts as festive prices rise

India weighs sugar duty cuts as festive prices rise

Sugar is used in sweets, drinks and many foods.

People in India usually buy much more sugar during festival time.

Prices have gone up, so the government is thinking about allowing some sugar imports without the usual tax.

The government is also limiting how much sugar dealers can store to discourage hoarding.

Some factories in Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra plan to start making sugar earlier than usual.

Less-than-normal rain could hurt the sugarcane crops used to make sugar.

However, the main sugar industry association says there should still be enough sugar in the country.

It says the recent price rise is not supported by the available supply and demand information.

Officials are discussing these measures to help keep sugar available and prices under control.
