Mumbai, Kanpur Locker Thefts Raise Questions About Bank Compensation

Mumbai, Kanpur Locker Thefts Raise Questions About Bank Compensation

People use bank lockers to store valuable items such as jewellery.

Recent reports describe valuables missing from lockers in Kanpur and Mumbai.

A woman in Kanpur reportedly lost jewellery worth ₹50 lakh.

Pradeep Motiram Bhatia reported that 610 grams of gold worth ₹81.8 lakh was missing from his Mumbai locker.

Banks do not keep a list of what customers store in their lockers.

They may have to pay compensation if their negligence or a security problem caused the loss.

The maximum compensation is 100 times the yearly locker rent.

Customers do not automatically receive this amount because they must prove the bank was at fault.
