Mumbai-Pune Expressway Sees 26% Drop in Accidental Deaths
The government has approved a new expressway between Mumbai and Pune to make travel faster and easier.
This new road, costing Rs 15,000 crore, will be eight lanes wide and can handle a lot of cars, about 3 lakh every day.
It will connect important places like the Atal Setu in Mumbai and the new airport in Navi Mumbai.
The road will also go through tunnels and bridges in the mountains to avoid traffic jams.
The current expressway is already very busy, with up to 120,000 cars on weekends.
The new expressway is expected to be finished in three years and will help people travel between the two cities much quicker, in just 90 minutes.
Additionally, the existing Mumbai-Pune Expressway saw a 26% drop in accidental deaths in 2025, thanks to better safety measures and awareness campaigns.
This means fewer accidents and fewer people getting hurt on the road.
The Mumbai-Pune Expressway 2, costing Rs 15,000 crore, will reduce travel time between the cities to 90 minutes.
The eight-lane expressway will integrate with Atal Setu, Navi Mumbai Airport, JNPT, and Pune's Ring Road.
The route will include tunnels and elevated bridges through the Sahyadri range, terminating at Shivare in Bhor taluka.
The project aims to handle nearly 3 lakh vehicles per day and will start after clearances, with completion targeted in three years.
The current Mumbai-Pune Expressway saw a 26% decline in accidental deaths between January and November 2025, with 61 fatalities compared to 82 in the same period in 2024.
