LIC Wins RBI Approval to Raise HDFC Bank Stake

LIC Wins RBI Approval to Raise HDFC Bank Stake

LIC is an insurance company that already owns part of HDFC Bank.

The Reserve Bank of India has allowed LIC to buy more shares.

LIC can now increase its holding from 4.11% to as much as 9.99%.

HDFC Bank is described as a systemically important bank, meaning the government could support it in a serious crisis.

One expert said LIC’s larger stake may make investors and the public feel more confident.

Another possible reason is that LIC hopes to earn money if the bank performs well over time.

LIC owns 49% of IDBI Bank, so it cannot own more than 10% of any bank.

This is also why its stake in Yes Bank has remained below 10%.
