Indian Railways Plans Four-Laning of 11,000-Km High-Density Network

Indian Railways Plans Four-Laning of 11,000-Km High-Density Network

Indian Railways wants to add more tracks to some of its busiest routes.

The plan covers about 11,000 kilometers of railway lines.

These routes are part of seven high-density corridors.

They carry about 41% of all railway traffic in the country.

However, they make up only about 16% of the entire rail network.

More tracks could allow more passenger and freight trains to run.

The plan is also meant to reduce crowding and delays on busy routes.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said rail transport can provide environmental and economic benefits.
