Kolkata Building Safety Audits Likely to Miss Deadline
The government in Kolkata, India, started checking buildings that are still being built to make sure they are safe.
They wanted to finish these checks by July 31, but it looks like they won't make it.
So far, they have checked about 200 buildings in Kolkata and 34 in Bidhannagar.
Only a few have been cleared to continue building.
The government has to decide whether to extend the deadline or let builders start again if they promise to follow the rules.
Builders are worried because the delays are causing problems for them, the people buying homes, and the workers.
Safety audit of under-construction buildings in Kolkata is unlikely to meet the July 31 deadline.
Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has inspected 200 buildings, with reports submitted for about half.
Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation has identified over 60 buildings needing audits, with 34 applications received.
Only 24 buildings in KMC and 3 in Bidhannagar have been cleared for resumption of construction.
Government must choose between extending the deadline or allowing work to resume with undertakings from developers.
