Fair Pricing Debate Grows As UPI Network Costs Rise

Fair Pricing Debate Grows As UPI Network Costs Rise

UPI lets people make payments without seeing a fee.

Shops can also accept UPI without paying the usual card-payment charge.

However, running this large payment system costs a lot of money.

Banks, payment companies and the government currently cover much of that cost.

A committee estimated that the system costs about Rs 20,700 crore each year, while government support is about Rs 2,000 crore.

Officials are considering charging some large merchants or high-value transactions.

The article says small vendors should not face the same charges as large supermarket chains.

It also says pricing should be designed carefully so it does not slow UPI’s growth in areas where digital payments are still developing.
