IIT-Bombay to study Mumbai suburban rail network
The Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC) has asked IIT Bombay to study the Mumbai Suburban Railway.
They want to know how much money is needed to run the trains and if it can make money in the long run.
The study will compare the costs of the suburban railway with the Metro.
It will also look at things like how much it costs to move one passenger, how long it takes to make back the money spent, how energy is used, how often maintenance is needed, and if the trains are standardised.
This will help them understand if the suburban railway is a good investment.
MRVC has commissioned IIT Bombay to study the Mumbai Suburban Railway's budgetary needs and financial sustainability.
The study will compare suburban railway costs with Metro systems.
Key parameters include cost per passenger-kilometre, payback periods, energy utilisation, maintenance cycles, and rolling stock standardisation.
The scope of the study covers the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).
The study aims to evaluate the long-term financial viability of the suburban railway.
