GMADA Orders Removal of Illegal Berm Structures
GMADA, which is like the city planning team, sent a notice to people living in Mohali and New Chandigarh.
They said that some people have put cement and tiles around trees on the sides of roads, which is not allowed.
The rules say that trees need at least one metre of open soil around them so they can get air and water.
GMADA told everyone to remove these cement structures within 15 days, or they will take them down themselves.
This is because covering the roots of trees can harm them, and the rules are there to protect the trees.
GMADA issued a notice ordering the removal of illegal concrete structures and tiles around trees and plants on road berms in Mohali and New Chandigarh.
Residents have cemented areas around plants on road berms, covering the roots completely, which violates National Green Tribunal (NGT) guidelines.
NGT guidelines require at least one metre of open soil around every tree to ensure proper air and water supply to the roots.
Residents have 15 days to remove the unauthorized structures, or GMADA will undertake demolition.
The notice follows recent anti-encroachment drives by the Municipal Corporation.
