UGC Mandates Equity Committees to Combat Caste Bias in Higher Education
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has made new rules for colleges and universities.
These rules say that every school must have a special team called an 'equity committee'.
This team will help if someone feels they are being treated unfairly because of their caste, gender, or disability.
The team must meet quickly if there is a problem and report their findings within 15 days.
The school must then take action within 7 days.
If a school does not follow these rules, they might not get money from the government.
The UGC will also have a big team to make sure these rules are being followed everywhere.
UGC has notified new regulations requiring higher education institutions to form equity committees to address discrimination complaints.
Equity committees must include members from OBCs, SCs, STs, persons with disabilities, and women.
The regulations mandate a 24-hour response time for the committee to meet and a 15-day deadline to submit reports to the institution head.
Institutions must take further action within 7 days of receiving the committee's report.
Non-compliant institutions may be debarred from participating in UGC schemes and receiving central grants.
