Women in manufacturing: Manesar institute trains more female workers

The Japan-India Institute for Manufacturing teaches students how to work with machines, vehicles, and electrical equipment.

It is located in Manesar, Haryana.

Nishika is learning to repair and paint cars there.

She hopes the training will help her enter the second year of a polytechnic course.

Only a small number of students at the institute are girls.

The institute is trying to attract more girls with free tuition, a women’s hostel, and more women staff members.

Students spend part of the year in classrooms and part learning on the shop floor.

They can also receive a stipend while they train.
