Growing crises facing government school education in India

Many children in India go to government schools.

In villages, most children—about 66 out of every 100—study in these schools.

In cities, only about 30 out of every 100 do.

A new report from the government's statistics ministry looked at schools in villages.

The report found that many schools do not have the important things children need to learn well.

Some schools do not have enough good teachers, enough space, or good books and lessons.

A professor named Rampal said that when these things are missing, children cannot really learn.

He said the situation is not good and needs to be fixed quickly.

This story is the first of two parts about government schools in India.
