DR Congo Ebola Cases Surpass 5,500 as WHO Warns

An Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has infected more than 5,500 people.

More than 2,600 people have died, while 1,200 have recovered.

The outbreak is spreading across 57 health zones in six provinces.

Ituri has the largest share of cases and deaths.

The World Health Organisation says the outbreak is growing faster than response teams can control it.

Many people are dying in their communities before reaching treatment centres.

Fighting, unsafe conditions, travel problems and distrust are making the response harder.

More laboratories and treatment beds are now available.

The WHO says the next few months will be very important for slowing the disease.
