London Residents Urged to Prepare for Possible Severe Winter Weather
British Gas is asking people in London to get ready for possible winter disruptions.
It suggests keeping water, food, medicines and warm blankets at home.
People are also encouraged to check their heating and prepare their cars for freezing weather.
The article says a strong El Niño in the Pacific may affect winds high in the atmosphere.
This could weaken a ring of winds that usually helps keep very cold Arctic air near the North Pole.
If that happens, colder air might move toward the UK.
The Met Office says this is a possibility, not a certainty.
Local officials also recommend checking on older or vulnerable neighbours.
British Gas advises London residents to assemble emergency kits with water, canned food, medicines and blankets.
The company also recommends insulating water pipes and checking car tires, brakes and fuel.
The article links winter concerns to a strong El Niño and its possible effects on the polar vortex.
The Met Office says a polar-vortex weakening could increase the chance of Sudden Stratospheric Warming and cold weather, but is not certain.
Councils and public health officials advise reviewing emergency plans, checking heating and looking in on vulnerable neighbours.
- Who
- British Gas issued the advice to London residents; the Met Office and local officials also provided guidance.
- What
- Residents were advised to prepare for possible winter disruption and cold weather.
- When
- Ahead of the colder months; the article gives no publication date.
- Where
- London and the wider UK.
- Why
- A strong El Niño may increase the chance of changes to the polar vortex and Sudden Stratospheric Warming, which could raise the risk of cold weather.

Elevated winter risk
The article says a strong El Niño may raise the chance of Sudden Stratospheric Warming, potentially allowing Arctic air to spill south and bring cold conditions to the UK.
Uncertain outcome
The Met Office says an atmospheric breakdown is not certain; El Niño changes the probabilities rather than guaranteeing severe winter weather.
- Emergency food guidance
- Keep three days of food, according to the headline.
- Suggested emergency supplies
- Bottled water, canned food, prescription medicines and extra blankets.
- Home preparation
- Insulate water pipes and check heating efficiency.
- Vehicle preparation
- Check tires and brakes, and keep the fuel tank at least half full.
- Weather mechanism
- A possible polar-vortex weakening could allow cold polar air to move south.
- Met Office assessment
- The atmospheric breakdown is not certain, but the ocean anomaly changes weather probabilities.
- El Niño temperature figure
- The article reports central-eastern Pacific sea-surface temperatures at 3.05°C above average.
