Brain Scans Show Dogs Can Tell Human Fear From Sadness

Dogs are really good at watching people.

Scientists wanted to know if dogs can tell the difference between human feelings like fear, sadness, and anger.

They used a big machine called an MRI that takes pictures of the brain.

Dogs sat in the machine while looking at photos of human faces.

The brain pictures showed that fear made different parts of a dog's brain light up than sadness or anger did.

But anger and sadness seemed to use the same parts.

Scientists think this might be because fear and anger can be dangerous and dogs need to react fast.

This was the first time brain scans showed proof that dogs tell human feelings apart.

The study had only a small number of dogs, so scientists will need to do more research.
