Kuki Zo Forum Calls Protest Over Buffer Zone Breaches
The Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum (ITLF), which represents the Kuki-Zo people, has called for a peaceful protest in Torbung.
They are upset because they say the Meitei people are breaking the rules of a buffer zone that separates their communities.
The ITLF also mentioned that some unknown people have planted explosives, which has made everyone scared, especially during the Christmas season.
This comes after a recent incident where some armed people fired shots from the Kuki-Zo side towards Meitei areas, making the situation tense.
The police are investigating and have found some weapons.
The Kuki-Zo Council, which is trying to solve the conflict with the government, is also worried about these events.
The Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum (ITLF) called for a peaceful sit-in protest at Torbung over alleged buffer zone breaches by Meiteis.
The buffer zone separates Kuki-Zo settlements in the hills from Meitei settlements in the valley and must be respected to avoid conflict.
Explosives planted beyond the buffer zone have caused fear and disrupted the peaceful atmosphere during the Christmas season.
An incident on Tuesday night involved armed miscreants firing from the Kuki-Zo-majority Churachandpur side towards Meitei settlements, prompting heightened security.
Police recovered arms and ammunition, including six Pumpi guns and 3kg of IED, during their operations.
