Greenland Deal Expands U.S. Access Without Ending Danish Sovereignty

Donald Trump said the United States would gain permanent control over Greenland’s security.

Denmark and Greenland describe the agreement differently.

They say Greenland remains under Danish sovereignty, while Greenlanders keep the right to decide their future.

The deal is expected to give the United States more military access and rights to use bases and airspace.

This is not the same as the United States taking ownership of Greenland.

America has had military agreements and facilities in Greenland for many decades.

The agreement also aims to strengthen Arctic defense through cooperation with NATO.

Its full legal text has not yet been released, so some details remain uncertain.
