Artists Turn 1994 Andaman Research Into Archive-Based Artwork
In 1994, three young artists travelled from Delhi to the Andaman Islands.
They wanted to make a film about the islands’ history, but they never finished it.
They did, however, collect many things while researching, such as notes, photographs, and letters.
More than 30 years later, they brought those materials together as an artwork.
It is being shown in Hong Kong at the Asia Art Archive.
The exhibition helps visitors see how artists research and how collected materials can become art.
One reel from the unfinished film was found shortly before the exhibition.
The show is scheduled to end on October 31.
Raqs Media Collective’s founders began researching a planned film in the Andaman Islands in 1994.
The film, titled Black Waters or Kala Pani, was never completed; only two reels were made.
The artists gathered notebooks, photographs, letters, drawings, and other material during their research.
That material is now presented as Black Waters: An Event Shaped Hole at the Asia Art Archive in Hong Kong.
The installation is part of At 25: Artists’ Early Worlds, an exhibition about artists’ early lives and practices.
