India Restricts Cheap Penicillin Ingredient Imports

India Restricts Cheap Penicillin Ingredient Imports

The Indian government has decided to limit the import of certain penicillin drugs if they are too cheap.

This rule applies to Penicillin G-potassium, 6-APA, and Amoxicillin Trihydrate.

If these drugs are imported at a price lower than ₹2,216 per kg for Penicillin G-potassium, ₹3,405 per kg for 6-APA, and ₹2,733 per kg for Amoxicillin Trihydrate, they will need special permission.

This rule does not apply to certain special economic zones or export units.

The government made this change to control the import of these drugs and support local production, and it will be in effect for one year.

The Directorate General of Foreign Trade and the Drug Controller General of India are responsible for this rule, which is based on the Foreign Trade (Development & Regulation) Act, 1992, and the Foreign Trade Policy 2023.
