Ladakh Launches Changthang Vision for Conservation and Sustainable Livelihoods
Ladakh has launched a report about the future of Changthang.
It says people should work together to care for the region’s grasslands and wildlife.
It also aims to support the people who make their living by raising animals there.
The report brings nature, local livelihoods and cultural traditions into one shared plan.
Government officials, researchers, community members and other groups joined the launch.
Changthang is a high-altitude region in eastern Ladakh near China.
It is known for its cold landscapes, lakes and wildlife.
The initiative is part of WWF-India’s conservation work in the western Himalayas.
The Ladakh administration launched the Changthang Visioning Report to guide conservation, wildlife protection and sustainable livelihoods.
The report calls for a shared future centred on healthy rangelands, thriving wildlife and resilient pastoral communities.
Chief Secretary Ashish Kundra attended the launch at The Grand Dragon in Leh.
The event brought together government, conservation and academic representatives, pastoral communities, youth and women’s groups, and religious leaders.
The initiative is part of WWF-India’s western Himalayas conservation programme and comes as 2026 is observed as the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists.
