Tennessee's Planned Female Execution Pits Culpability Against Brain Science

Christa Pike was sentenced to death for helping kill Colleen Slemmer in Tennessee in 1995.

Pike was 18 years old when the crime happened.

Her lawyers said she had suffered serious abuse and trauma while growing up.

They also said alcohol exposure before birth may have affected her brain development.

Pike was later diagnosed with bipolar disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Her lawyers argued that she had changed greatly during 30 years in prison.

The victim's mother supported carrying out the sentence.

The Supreme Court ultimately allowed Tennessee to proceed with the planned execution.
