'Husband Need Not Abandon Ailing Parents,' Court Upholds Divorce

'Husband Need Not Abandon Ailing Parents,' Court Upholds Divorce

A court in Chhattisgarh upheld a divorce between a husband and wife.

The husband said his wife repeatedly wanted him to leave his sick parents.

He said she also repeatedly went to her parental home and treated his parents disrespectfully.

The court said marriage creates a new family but does not erase duties toward ill or elderly parents.

However, it also said that wanting to live separately is not always wrong.

It depends on whether there is a good reason, such as an unsafe or oppressive home.

The wife said she was depressed after their son died and that her husband treated her badly.

After looking at the couple’s behavior over time, the court decided the marriage had become too difficult to continue.
