Meera Syal Reveals Assault That Redirected Her Career
Meera Syal has spoken publicly for the first time about being sexually assaulted when she was in her twenties.
The assault happened after an older actor invited her to his London home.
She thought he might help her find acting work.
She did not tell the police or her family at the time.
Later, she found support from female friends and South Asian writers.
Those writers helped her find a place to live and encouraged her to write.
Syal says writing helped her recover and find her voice.
She later became famous for shows such as Goodness Gracious Me and The Kumars at No 42.
Meera Syal says she was sexually assaulted by an older Asian actor in the 1980s.
She had believed the actor was offering to help her find acting work.
Syal did not report the assault because she feared putting her parents through a criminal trial.
South Asian writers supported her afterward and encouraged her to write.
She says the experience influenced the outspoken women and comedy characters she later created.
