India's Secondary Aluminium Sector Fuels Green Growth and Global Competitiveness
Imagine we need a lot more aluminum for things like cars and buildings.
Instead of making all new aluminum, which uses tons of energy and makes pollution, we can recycle old aluminum cans and parts.
This old aluminum, called scrap, is used by special factories in India.
These factories use way less energy and make much less pollution than making new aluminum.
They even help India sell more green aluminum around the world.
To help these recycling factories grow, the industry wants the government to make it easier to bring in scrap from other countries and to lower taxes.
This will help India make more green products, create jobs, and be a leader in recycling.
India's secondary aluminium sector, using 20% domestic and 80% imported scrap, meets nearly 40% of the nation's aluminium demand.
Recycling aluminium uses 95% less energy and emits over 90% less CO2 compared to primary production.
The industry aligns with India's Circular Economy Roadmap and Make in India 2.0 initiatives, supporting MSMEs.
The MRAI advocates for policy changes, including reducing import duty and GST on aluminium scrap, to boost the sector.
Sustainable growth in the secondary aluminium industry is seen as crucial for India's Net Zero 2070 targets and global competitiveness in green aluminium.
