BJP suspends Pulwama district chief booked for extortion
The police in a place called Jammu and Kashmir received a complaint about a politician named Syed Showkat Gayoor.
He was an important leader in a political party called the BJP, in charge of the Pulwama area.
A builder named Mohammad Yasin Ganie said Gayoor asked him for money.
The builder said Gayoor threatened to have him locked up under a special law called the Public Safety Act if he did not pay.
Ganie said he was forced to pay 54,000 rupees in two parts in November last year.
The police wrote an official report called an FIR about the complaint.
They said Gayoor is accused of stopping the builder from working, scaring him, and asking for money unfairly.
After this, the BJP said Gayoor cannot do his party job anymore for now.
The party will decide what happens to him after its investigation is finished.

BJP suspended Gayoor from all organisational posts and responsibilities until disciplinary proceedings against him are finalised.
