SC defers Hawara’s plea for Punjab jail transfer
A man named Jagtar Singh Hawara is in jail for a long time because he was involved in a big crime.
He wants to move from a jail in Delhi to a jail in his home state, Punjab.
The Supreme Court, which is like the highest court in India, was supposed to decide about this, but they postponed the decision for two weeks.
Hawara has been in jail since 1995 for his role in a bombing that killed many people, including a former leader of Punjab.
He says he has been good in jail and there are no more cases against him in Delhi, so he should be moved.
The Supreme Court deferred the hearing on Jagtar Singh Hawara's plea for transfer to a Punjab jail by two weeks.
Hawara is serving a life sentence for the 1995 murder of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh.
The bench adjourned the matter as Solicitor General Tushar Mehta was not available.
Hawara's plea argues that his conduct in prison has been good and there are no pending cases against him in Delhi.
The apex court had issued notices to the Centre, Chandigarh administration, and the Delhi and Punjab governments on September 27, 2023.
