Surat halts school site change amid protests
In Surat, India, there was a plan to move the construction of Suman High School from Ward No.
7 to Ward No.
8.
Some officials did this without following the right steps, which made people upset.
The Chief Minister told the city council to stop the construction and find out who was responsible.
Many people from Ward No.
7, who are not very rich, wanted the school to stay in their area because they can't afford private schools.
They even protested to make their voices heard.
The council listened and stopped the construction at the new site.
They also said they will punish the officials who did not follow the rules.
Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) halted the construction of Suman High School at a new site in Ward No. 8 after allegations of procedural violations.
Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel ordered a probe and strict action against officials involved in the unauthorized site change.
Residents of Ward No. 7, primarily from low and middle-income groups, protested and submitted a memorandum requesting the school to remain in their ward.
The original proposal to build the school in Ward No. 7 was approved in July 2023, with construction tenders awarded to Gaurav Builders.
