Govt Invites Fresh PLI Applications for Bulk Drugs
The Indian government is asking companies to apply for a special program called PLI to make more medicines in India.
They want to make two important medicines: meropenem, which is an antibiotic, and ritonavir, which is used to treat HIV.
The government will choose eight companies, four for each medicine.
These companies need to be able to make a certain amount of each medicine every year.
The government is doing this because India buys a lot of these medicines from China, and they want to make more of them in India to reduce this dependence.
The program has already helped some companies make medicines in India, and they have sold some of these medicines both in India and to other countries.
DoP invites fresh applications for PLI scheme to boost domestic production of meropenem and ritonavir.
Eight firms to be selected, four for each product category, with specified minimum production capacities.
Applicants must comply with scheme conditions, including incentive ceilings and production tenure up to FY28.
Companies previously approved but withdrew or were canceled are ineligible to apply this time.
India aims to reduce reliance on Chinese imports for bulk drugs, with 32 pharma entities already selected under the scheme.
