Protesters demand four-lane highway through Jakhalabandha
People in Kaliabor, Assam, are protesting because they want a big, four-lane road to go through their town, Jakhalabandha.
The government wants to build the road around the town instead.
The protesters say this will hurt their jobs and farms.
They have been asking for this for three years, and they are getting upset because the government is not listening.
They even went to Delhi to talk to a big minister.
If the government doesn't change its plan, the protesters say they will make their protest bigger, like blocking roads.
They also say the government is not being fair and is maybe helping some people more than others.
The government has already approved a lot of money for the road, but the protesters are still not happy because they want the road to go through their town.
Protesters in Kaliabor demand the four-lane highway be constructed through Jakhalabandha instead of a bypass.
The government's bypass plan is opposed due to concerns about impacts on livelihoods, agriculture, and tea gardens.
Protesters attempted to lock the Kaliabor revenue circle office, leading to a brief confrontation with police.
Various organizations, including AASU and AJYCP, joined the protest and warned of intensified protests if demands are not met.
The Centre has approved Rs 6,957 crore for the four-laning of the Kaliabor–Numaligarh stretch of NH-715, including a 34-km Kaziranga corridor.
