FSSAI Introduces Stringent Testing for Packaged Water
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has introduced a new set of rules for packaged drinking and mineral water.
Starting from January 1, 2026, companies will no longer need a special certification from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).
Instead, they must follow strict testing rules to make sure the water is safe.
These tests will check for things like germs and other things that could make the water unsafe.
Companies will have to test their water every month and every three months for different things.
This change is meant to make sure all packaged water in India is safe to drink and to make the rules simpler for companies to follow.
FSSAI introduces a stringent testing framework for packaged drinking and mineral water effective January 1, 2026.
Mandatory BIS certification for packaged water has been scrapped.
Companies must adhere to monthly and quarterly testing for various quality and safety parameters.
FSSAI reclassifies packaged and mineral water as 'high-risk' category, mandating third-party audits.
The move aims to streamline compliance and ensure safety of packaged water products in India.
