Delhi Courts Dispose of Pocso Cases, Clearing Backlog
Imagine courts in Delhi were stuck with old cases about protecting kids from harm.
Recently, they worked hard and cleared almost all the cases that had been sitting around for over five years.
They got rid of about 508 cases!
In some of these cases, the person accused was found guilty, but in others, they were found not guilty.
The courts are now clearing these cases much faster than before.
Special courts were created to deal with these cases quickly, but it still takes about four years on average for a conviction to happen.
This is good news because it shows the courts are trying hard to make sure these cases are handled quickly.
Delhi High Court data reveals significant progress in disposing of POCSO cases pending over five years.
Lower courts in Delhi have disposed of 508 out of 519 POCSO cases pending for more than five years.
39% of disposed cases resulted in convictions, while 57% led to acquittals.
Some districts have cleared all long-pending cases, while others still have a few remaining.
The recent disposal rate is 3.6 times the average of other courts, according to the report.
