Andhra Pradesh Faces ₹4,500 Crore Power Sector Liabilities
The Andhra Pradesh government has found out that there is a big debt of ₹4,500 crore in the electricity sector.
This debt was made between 2019 and 2024.
The current government, led by the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), says this happened because the previous government, led by the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP), did not manage things well.
The current government has decided to pay this debt themselves so that people do not have to pay more for electricity.
A report by the Andhra Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission (APERC) showed that the electricity companies had asked for even more money, but after checking, the regulators said they could only get ₹4,500 crore.
The government will now pay this amount to the electricity companies.
Andhra Pradesh faces ₹4,500 crore in power sector liabilities due to mismanagement between 2019 and 2024.
The current TDP government has decided to absorb the liabilities to avoid burdening consumers with higher electricity tariffs.
APERC approved a net true-up amount of ₹4,497.89 crore after disallowing around ₹8,274 crore in inflated claims by DISCOMs.
The liabilities are distributed among three power distribution companies: APSPDCL, APCPDCL, and APEPDCL.
The decision to absorb the liabilities has intensified the political debate between the TDP and YSRCP over governance and financial management.
