Tamil Nadu Introduces Assured Pension Scheme
The Tamil Nadu government has introduced a new pension scheme called TAPS.
This scheme will give employees a guaranteed pension that is half of their last salary plus some extra money for living costs.
Employees will have to contribute a small part of their salary, and the government will pay the rest.
The scheme will start in 2026 and will also help families of employees who pass away.
The government will need a lot of money to start this scheme and will spend a lot every year to keep it going.
The exact rules will be announced later.
Tamil Nadu replaces its 23-year-old Contributory Pension System (CPS) with the Tamil Nadu Assured Pension Scheme (TAPS).
TAPS guarantees 50% of the last-drawn basic pay plus dearness allowance (DA) as monthly pension.
Employees will contribute 10% of their monthly salary, with the government covering the remaining cost.
The scheme will be mandatory for all new employees joining from January 1, 2026, and for those retiring on or after that date.
The government estimates an initial fund requirement of ₹13,000 crore and an annual expenditure of ₹11,000 crore.
