Defense argues Charlie Kirk shooter should not face death penalty

A man named Tyler Robinson is accused of shooting and killing Charlie Kirk, a well-known political speaker.

Mr. Kirk was killed at a university in Utah while he was talking to students.

The prosecutors want Mr. Robinson to receive the death penalty, the most serious punishment there is.

Mr. Robinson's lawyers say he should not get the death penalty.

They say he only shot the person he was aiming at and did not put anyone else in danger.

Under Utah law, the death penalty can be used when a shooting puts other people at high risk of dying, and the lawyers say that did not happen.

The prosecutors disagree and say Mr. Robinson shot from a rooftop above a large crowd with a powerful rifle.

They also say he loaded four bullets in case his first shot missed, which shows he knew others could be hurt.

A judge will meet on September 1 to decide whether there is enough evidence to hold a trial.
