Delhi Court Orders Hindustan Times to Pay ₹40 Lakh in Defamation Case
A newspaper and a former reporter have been ordered to pay a businessman a large sum of money because of a story they wrote.
The story, from 2007, said the businessman was fired from a company due to money problems, but the court found this wasn't true.
The court decided the story hurt the businessman's reputation.
The newspaper and reporter didn't have any proof to back up what they said.
The court also said the newspaper should apologize and can't publish similar untrue stories about the businessman again.
Delhi court ruled Hindustan Times and its former journalist must pay ₹40 lakh in damages.
The lawsuit stemmed from a 2007 article about the businessman Arun Kumar Gupta.
The article claimed Gupta was 'sacked' from a company due to financial issues.
The court found no evidence to support the claim of financial irregularities.
The newspaper was also ordered to issue an apology and cease publishing defamatory content.
