Fiji Declares HIV National Crisis as Diagnoses Surge

Fiji says HIV has become a serious national crisis.

HIV is a virus that can make people very sick without treatment.

The government said 2,016 people were diagnosed in 2025.

UNAIDS estimates that about 9,100 people in Fiji were living with HIV last year.

Many people did not know they had the virus or were not receiving medicine.

Some infections were linked to sex, while many others were linked to injecting drugs.

Fifty-nine babies were reported to have been born with HIV, and 18 died before their first birthday.

Fiji plans to offer more testing, medicine, treatment, and services to help prevent infections.

Officials say these services should be free, voluntary, confidential, and available across the country.
