Italy’s Revolving-Door Governments Hide More Stability Than Expected

Italy has changed governments many times since 1946.

Giorgia Meloni’s government is expected to become the longest-lasting one on September 4.

It will be the country’s 68th government during the republican era.

On average, Italian governments have lasted about 14 months.

Some governments ended quickly because coalition parties disagreed.

Italy’s lower house and Senate both must support the government.

This gives smaller coalition partners significant influence.

Even so, many governments kept similar political directions, and nine of 18 post-war legislatures lasted nearly five years.
