Trump Administration Proposes Parental Status Proof for Children’s Passports

The Trump administration wants parents to show more documents when applying for a passport for a child born in the United States.

The documents could prove that a parent is a U.S. citizen or has legal permission to live in the country.

Today, parents generally prove their relationship to the child and show photo identification.

They usually do not have to provide documents proving their own citizenship or immigration status.

The proposed change is connected to an executive order about birthright citizenship and “birth tourism.”

It lists situations involving foreign governments, fraud, commercial transactions, or people called “alien enemies.”

Lawyers representing potentially affected children are asking courts to stop the policy.

A federal judge expressed skepticism and allowed the lawsuit to be revised.

Justice Department lawyers say the lawsuits may have been filed before agencies explained how the order would work.
