Ahmedabad to Survey Stray Dogs Amid Supreme Court Case
The city of Ahmedabad in India is going to count all the stray dogs.
They want to know how many there are and where they live.
This is because the highest court in India is talking about stray dogs, and there are more people getting bitten by dogs.
The city has already put special chips in some dogs to track them.
They also want to make sure the dogs are healthy and not causing problems.
The last time they counted was in 2019, and they found over 2 lakh dogs.
Now, they think there are about 1.5 lakh.
They are also giving more vaccines to people who get bitten by dogs to keep them safe.
Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) to conduct a comprehensive survey of stray dogs in all 48 wards.
Supreme Court guidelines and rising dog bite cases (27.5 lakh in 2023) prompt the survey.
AMC estimates current stray dog population at 1.5 lakh, down from 2.1 lakh in 2019.
RFID chips implanted in 6,007 stray dogs since January 2025 to track and manage the population.
Survey aims to identify sterilized dogs, dog-human ratios, and areas needing infrastructure for relocation.
