Senate Moves to Block California's Vehicle Emission Rules
The Senate is having a big argument about California's rules to fight air pollution.
California wants to stop selling new gas cars by 2035.
Republicans in the Senate voted to let them block these rules, which could affect other rules too.
Democrats are not happy and say Republicans are helping the oil and gas companies.
Basically, Republicans think California's rules are too expensive and could cause problems with energy.
Democrats believe California should be able to set its own standards.
The fight is also about whether the Senate can change how it makes decisions.
Senate Republicans voted to allow blocking California's vehicle emission standards, including a gas-powered car phase-out by 2035.
The vote establishes a new precedent, with Democrats objecting and delaying the proceedings.
The rules at issue include phasing out gas-powered cars, reducing emissions from trucks, and curbing smog.
Republicans argue the rules are costly, while Democrats accuse Republicans of acting on behalf of oil and gas interests.
The Senate's action potentially impacts California's authority to set stricter emission standards.
