Trump Admin Offers Exit Bonus for Self-Deporting Immigrants
The US government is offering people who are in the country illegally a deal if they agree to leave on their own.
If they use a special app to self-deport, they get a free plane ticket, $1,000, and any old fines they owe are canceled.
An immigration lawyer says this is unfair to people who followed the rules and tried to come to the US legally.
The lawyer feels it is wrong that those who came here through irregular means are being offered benefits, while legal immigrants don't get the same advantages.
This program was announced by the Department of Homeland Security.
USCIS encourages illegal immigrants to self-deport through the CBP Home App.
Self-deportation offers include a free plane ticket and a $1,000 exit bonus.
Unpaid fines for failing to depart previously will be forgiven.
Immigration attorney Robert Webber criticized the bonus as an 'insult' to legal immigrants.
The move was first announced in May by the Department of Homeland Security.
