Tea Growers Welcome Weather-Based Insurance Scheme
The Indian government is helping tea farmers by providing weather-based insurance.
This means if bad weather like too much rain or heat damages their tea crops, they'll get money to help them out.
The insurance is called RWBCIS and will start in 2025.
Tea growers are happy because they have been struggling with changing weather patterns that have made it hard to grow tea.
Many smaller tea farmers will benefit from the insurance as they provide more than half of India's tea.
Assam, West Bengal, and South Indian states grow a lot of tea.
The government will include the tea sector under the Restructured Weather Based Crop Insurance Scheme (RWBCIS).
The Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare issued a notification on June 10, 2024.
States and UTs must finalize insurance company details by June 20, 2024.
Tea growers have faced production fluctuations due to erratic rainfall and rising temperatures.
Small tea growers contribute to over 50% of India's total tea production.
