India revising Model Bilateral Investment Treaty to speed investor disputes

India revising Model Bilateral Investment Treaty to speed investor disputes

India is working on a new deal that promises fair treatment for businesses from other countries.

The deal is called a Bilateral Investment Treaty, or BIT for short.

When a foreign company has a problem in India, it usually must first ask Indian courts for help.

Waiting for the courts can take a very long time.

Under the new plan, companies would wait much less before they can take their case to international judges.

India already made the waiting time three years in its deal with the United Arab Emirates.

It used to be five years.

Reports say the waiting time could become two years in some deals.

India also wants to protect its own companies that invest in other countries.

Foreign companies are already investing more money in India than ever before, and India wants even more.
