NGO files PIL against public space encroachment in Calcutta

NGO files PIL against public space encroachment in Calcutta

An NGO called Concern for Calcutta has filed a petition in the high court to address issues of unauthorised parking, illegal hoardings, and hawkers taking over public spaces in the city.

The NGO argues that pavements should be clear for pedestrians and that hawkers should follow the rules to leave enough space for walking.

The court has asked for reports from civic authorities to address these issues.

The NGO highlights that areas like Burrabazar, New Market, and Camac Street are particularly affected.

Hawkers, on the other hand, need space to conduct their businesses and support their livelihoods.

The street vending rules say hawkers should use only one-third of the pavement width, but the NGO believes this still takes away pedestrian rights in narrow pavements.
